Once you’ve connected with a breeder you’re interested in, don’t hesitate to ask questions to learn how they prioritize the well-being and quality of their puppies and support their clients.

Here are 10 essentials questions we recommend asking breeders.

What is your approach to puppy socialization?

Proper puppy socialization is crucial for a puppy’s development into a well-adjusted dog. It is crucial to ensure that puppies have been exposed to various experiences, including interactions with people and other dogs, and are comfortable in a household environment. A responsible breeder focuses on early socialization, allowing the puppies to explore different environments, surfaces, and engage in playtime. This helps the puppies develop confidence, adaptability, and better adjust to new surroundings and life with their future owners.

Can I meet the dog’s parents?

If possible, visit the kennel in person and meet the puppy’s parents and check out the facilities. Make sure that they appear to be in good health and assess temperament of the parents. Are they shy, or social and well-adjusted? You can also ask about the linage of the parents. For example, ask how long they live on average and what they tend to die from in old age. Take notes to help monitor for issues as they get older.

Have the puppies and their parents received up-to-date vaccinations?

It is essential to confirm that the breeder has taken the necessary steps to provide proper veterinary care for the puppy, including vaccinations. This ensures that you receive accurate medical information and enables you to plan for the puppy's future vaccination needs.

Additionally, responsible breeders prioritize the health of both the puppies and the parent dogs by ensuring that they receive core vaccinations such as distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Bordetella (kennel cough).

This commitment to comprehensive preventive care showcases the breeder's dedication to the well-being of their dogs and instills confidence in the overall quality of their breeding program.

Have the parents undergone health and genetic testing?

It is crucial to ensure that the parents of the litter have undergone a health and genetic testing. This crucial step aims to prevent the transmission of any potential health issues to the puppies. Each breed typically has a set of recommended health tests tailored to their specific breed. For a comprehensive list of these breed-specific health screenings, you can find them at the OFA’s website

Do you offer a Health Guarantee and provide a contract?

Inquire about the breeder's guarantee for their puppies, particularly regarding serious health conditions. It is important to understand their policies if the puppy is found to have a severe illness and what compensation or support they offer in such cases. Additionally, clarify if the breeder is willing to reclaim the puppy if you are no longer able to care for it. Discussing these details upfront ensures clarity and addresses potential concerns.

What are you currently feeding the puppies?

The first year of a puppy’s life is an important period of growth, which is why they need nutrition specifically formulated to nourish their developing bodies and minds. We recommend choosing a dog food brand that has undergone feeding trials and/or has an AAFCO statement of nutritional adequacy, plus meets World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) guidelines, such as Purina Pro Plan. If you plan to change the puppy’s diet after bringing them home, do so gradually. If the breeder is feeding a raw food diet, be aware of the potential risk of nutritional deficiencies and illnesses that can arise with feeding raw food.

When will the puppy be ready to come home with us?

It is important for the breeder to inform you that the puppy should not be taken away before reaching the age of eight to 12 weeks. Removing them too early can lead to potential issues. It is crucial for puppies to have enough time to mature and socialize with their mother and littermates for their overall well-being.

Could you provide any training tips that have been effective for your puppies?

House training can be one of the most challenging aspects for new puppy owners, but breeders, with their wealth of experience, can provide valuable advice that has proven effective with previous puppies.

Can we contact you for support after bringing the puppy home?

A responsible breeder should be open to providing their contact details and encouraging communication regarding any questions or issues that may arise. They often have a genuine interest in staying connected, conducting follow-ups, and offering guidance to ensure the well-being and successful upbringing of their puppies. Having a breeder as a resource and mentor throughout your dog's life can be invaluable, providing you with expert advice and support whenever it is needed.

What requirements do you have for potential puppy owners?

It is important for breeders to address any questions you may have and also inquire about your suitability as a puppy owner. Responsible breeders aim to ensure that their puppies are placed in good homes with individuals who are well-prepared and knowledgeable about what to expect.

Finding the right buyer is just as important as finding the right breeder. It is essential to ensure that the breeder is responsible, demonstrates care for their dogs, and will continue to provide support and guidance throughout your dog's life. Ultimately, the goal is to bring home a healthy and well-suited puppy that will thrive in its new environment.
